Transforming the Transport Landscape with Electric Trucks
As part of a decisive move toward decarbonizing transportation in Spain, MAN Truck & Bus Iberia has delivered its first series electric truck to the Guipuzcoan company Garrai. This vehicle, the MAN eTGS 20.449 4×2 BL SA, is a fully electric tractor that symbolizes a significant advancement in sustainable logistics and road transport.
Equipped with a power output of 449 CV and a configuration of five battery modules with a usable capacity of 400 kWh, this truck is designed for medium-distance operations. Its range is well-suited for regular routes between the Sasieta Transfer Station and the Zubieta Energy Recovery Plant, with overnight recharging supported by a 40 kW DC charger.
Benefits of Using 100% Renewable Energy
What sets this electric truck apart is its reliance on 100% renewable energy sourced in Spain. This means that the MAN 20.449 will effectively prevent the emission of approximately 80 tons of CO2 annually, contributing significantly to environmental preservation.
- Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
- Utilization of renewable energy sources
- Enhanced efficiency in logistics operations
A Strategic Collaboration for Sustainable Mobility
The integration of this electric truck into Garrai's fleet underscores a strong partnership between the two companies, with Garrai now boasting a fleet that is 90% MAN vehicles. This collaboration is rooted in trust, efficiency, and technological innovation.
“We chose MAN again because of the trust built over many years of collaboration, their after-sales service, and the peace of mind they provide in our daily operations. Incorporating this electric truck represents a firm step towards zero-emission transport and a cleaner future,” remarked Koro Irazu, Transport Manager at Garrai.
Supporting Public-Private Partnerships in Sustainability
José Ignacio Asensio, the Deputy for Sustainability, emphasized that this initiative is a vital step in the decarbonization strategy of the Gipuzkoa Waste Consortium. He highlighted that such projects are the result of productive public-private collaborations and the commitment of companies like Garrai and MAN to a more sustainable, competitive, and innovative economy.
“We are demonstrating that public institutions can be at the forefront of technological innovation, leading change and collaborating with companies that share our vision,” he stated.
The Future of Electric Trucks in Spain
Sergio Jerónimo Miranda Alonso, eMobility Expert at MAN, expressed excitement about the launch: “For the team at MAN Truck & Bus Iberia, this milestone marks the beginning of electric truck deliveries in Spain, with more to come in the following months. We are proud to partner with Garrai on this pioneering initiative that reflects the commitment of both companies to a sustainable future.”
Expanding the Electric Truck Portfolio
Before commencing full-scale production, MAN manufactured and delivered a preliminary series of nearly 200 electric trucks, which have collectively traveled over two million kilometers across Europe. These vehicles have already demonstrated their capabilities, achieving daily routes of up to 850 kilometers with an impressive average consumption of just 97 kWh per 100 kilometers.
With approximately 700 orders received for electric trucks, MAN is focusing on sectors like automotive logistics where electric vehicles are particularly beneficial.
Innovative Features of the MAN eTruck
Among the standout features of the MAN eTruck is the Ultra-Lowliner, a unique low-profile tractor with a fifth-wheel height of only 950 mm and a wheelbase of 3.75 meters. This design enables completely electric transport while providing an interior loading height of three meters, making it highly advantageous for specific logistics routes.
Another key advantage of the eTruck lies in its NMC batteries, which can be configured from three to six modular units, sourced from MAN's plant in Nuremberg. These batteries offer a total gross capacity of up to 534 kWh, allowing for journeys of up to 500 kilometers without intermediate recharges. For those requiring extended range, there’s an option to add a seventh battery, achieving up to 740 kilometers of electric travel without the need for recharging.
| Feature | Specification |
|---|---|
| Power Output | 449 CV |
| Battery Capacity | 400 kWh usable |
| Annual CO2 Reduction | 80 tons |
| Operational Range | Up to 740 km |
The introduction of the MAN eTGS not only represents a significant technological advancement but also sets a precedent for the future of sustainable transport in Spain and beyond. As electric trucks become more prevalent, they promise to play a crucial role in reducing emissions and promoting a greener logistics landscape.
