Fleet Profile: Enhanced Transportation Management Systems Benefit Two Fleets

As the transportation industry evolves at an unprecedented pace, carriers are increasingly recognizing the need for upgraded technology infrastructures to enhance their operations. Embracing automation and streamlining workflows are crucial steps towards meeting customer expectations, especially in a landscape characterized by rapid innovation.
Today, many fleets are turning to advanced Transportation Management Systems (TMS) like those provided by Trimble. These systems facilitate better integration of existing software and internal systems, enabling fleet management teams to strengthen communication and improve workflows. This transformation is vital for achieving live visibility into deliveries, driver locations, vehicle conditions, and other critical data.
With the surge of AI-enabled software revolutionizing the sector, functionalities such as route optimization, predictive maintenance, and reporting capabilities are becoming commonplace. A recent Deloitte survey revealed that an overwhelming 99% of transportation leaders anticipate significant technological transformations in the industry, albeit with a majority expecting the effects to materialize over a span of three years or more.
Embracing Technological Transformation
Technology providers, including Trimble, have been pivotal in helping freight companies modernize their technology infrastructures. Many businesses find themselves grappling with outdated processes, leading to inefficiencies that hinder overall performance. As a result, they often approach us feeling overwhelmed and in need of guidance.
Take, for example, Evans Distribution Systems, a prominent third-party logistics provider based in Michigan. With a fleet of 125 trucks operating continuously, they faced challenges in business management, particularly around customer demands and operational optimization.
In response to their needs for enhanced visibility and reporting, Evans sought a flexible fleet management solution. They implemented Trimble’s TMW.Suite TMS, which serves as a central hub connecting their existing systems.
Achieving Tangible Results
Following the implementation of TMW.Suite, Evans Distribution Systems has seen marked improvements in workflow efficiency and communication. Fleet managers and warehouse supervisors can now access up to 85 tailored customer reports simultaneously. This automation has freed up two dispatchers to focus on other critical business areas.
As Tony Trocki, Vice President of Transportation at Evans, noted: “With this new process, we’re not just saving time today; we’re laying the groundwork for even more impactful solutions moving forward.” This shift has enabled the company to deploy new innovations more rapidly and effectively.
Enhancing Data Access and Reporting
Increased access to clean data and insightful analytics can significantly enhance fleet management capabilities. This was precisely the case for Tucker Freight Lines, which faced challenges due to its reliance on manual processes for its diverse service offerings, including DOT compliance and vehicle maintenance.
With a fluctuating fleet size of 250 to 500 trucks, operational efficiency is paramount for Tucker. However, outdated processes led to inaccuracies in maintenance tracking and reporting, which negatively impacted all departments.
To address these issues, Tucker Freight Lines undertook a complete integration of Trimble's TMW.Suite TMS and TMT Fleet Maintenance. This strategic move transformed their operations and restored confidence in customer service delivery.
Streamlining Maintenance Management
Charles Martin, CIO of Tucker Freight Lines, emphasized the importance of reliable reporting: “We wanted to get to a place where reports could be relied upon for accurate information to run our shop using TMT software.” Integrating Trimble solutions was critical for maximizing their investment and enhancing operational efficiency.
The maintenance division at Tucker collaborated closely with Trimble to implement TMT Fleet Maintenance, creating a comprehensive project plan with a six-month timeline. Key milestones focused on addressing pain points such as data accuracy, system configuration, and providing hands-on training sessions.
This thorough approach involved verifying and updating data for over 1,500 pieces of equipment and correcting meter readings for more than 300 power units. As a result, Tucker has seen tangible benefits, including:
- Efficient management of maintenance tickets
- Automated invoicing processes for drivers
- Enhanced project management capabilities
- A digital system for maintenance tracking, saving over 20 hours per week
Strategic Partnerships: The Key to Successful Solutions
Investing in innovative technology solutions, whether from Trimble or other providers, requires fleets to consider the support teams that facilitate integrations, training, and strategic roadmaps for future enhancements.
Trocki has highlighted Trimble’s ability to provide seamless integration and customization, which significantly improved Evans’ customer relations and future outlook. The successful collaborations with both Tucker and Evans illustrate that strong partnerships form the backbone of effective software solutions and sustainable technology upgrades.
By fostering these relationships, fleets can ensure they not only implement new systems effectively but also adapt these technologies to meet evolving industry demands.
