The EV charging depot is set to occupy a 3.2-acre site within the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center, the largest wholesale food hub in the United States. According to the latest announcements, the depot will feature:
- 32 direct charging fast chargers capable of quickly powering up various vehicles;
- 8 stalls designed for Class 8 trailer-enabled trucks;
- 10 Level 2 chargers for additional support;
- A 12,500-square-foot welcome center, which will also serve as a workforce development hub.
The construction of this essential infrastructure is projected to commence in 2026. By focusing on accommodating Class 8, medium, and light-duty EVs, the facility is poised to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of urban fleets, particularly in high-demand environments.
Volvo Group's expanded electric vehicle presence in NYC
In addition to the introduction of the Mack LR Electric refuse truck, Volvo Trucks North America is set to deliver four Class 7 VNR Electric trucks to City Harvest later this year. These electric trucks will be equipped with battery-electric refrigeration units, ensuring that the logistics of food distribution can be achieved without compromising environmental goals. The Hunts Point depot will also serve as the charging location for these vehicles.
Moreover, the Fulton Fish Market Co-Op is scheduled to receive four Mack MD Electric medium-duty trucks. These trucks will facilitate zero-emission logistics operations, further showcasing the commitment to sustainable practices in urban environments.

- A robust 376 kWh battery capacity, providing 42% more energy than previous models;
- Featuring twin electric motors that deliver 448 continuous horsepower;
- Achieving a remarkable 4,051 lb.-ft. peak torque from zero RPM, ideal for immediate acceleration;
- Equipped with four NMC lithium-ion batteries for reliable energy storage;
- A 150 kW SAE J1772-compliant charging system to ensure compatibility with existing infrastructure;
- Implemented two-stage regenerative braking, enhancing energy recovery during frequent stop-and-go operations.
These features make the Mack LR Electric perfectly suited for the stop-and-go nature of urban waste collection routes, promoting both efficiency and sustainability.
