Managing Director Andre Wessels noted, “Two-shift operation is necessary. It makes the deployment economical for us; our fixed costs would be too high in single-shift operation.” This strategic decision allows the company to maximize the utilization of its fleet and ensure that the electric trucks are in constant operation, which is crucial for recouping the higher initial investment associated with EVs.
Since February, Wessels Logistik has been using two eActros 600 trucks, with plans to expand its electric fleet further. The company is currently implementing a comprehensive charging infrastructure project aimed at facilitating depot-based charging by the end of June. This infrastructure is critical not only for operational efficiency but also for ensuring that the trucks can be charged conveniently during off-hours.
While the eActros 600 presents many advantages, challenges remain, particularly with weight-sensitive freight. The additional weight of the battery can pose limitations, but the overall response from drivers has been overwhelmingly positive. “The drivers are convinced of the eActros 600, enjoy driving it, and don’t want to get off,” Wessels remarked, emphasizing the importance of user experience in adopting new technologies.

The TruckCharge initiative represents Daimler Truck’s commitment to establishing a semi-public charging network across Europe. The initiative encompasses consulting, planning, and infrastructure deployment, with a target of involving over 1,000 dealers and customers.
