Isuzu 4HK1 (Tier 3) Fault Code P0118

Fault Code P0118 Engine coolant temperature sensor fault (high voltage fault)

Item To Be Detected:
Open/short circuit/breakage of sensor or harness

Preconditons When DTC is Set:
1) Key switch input voltage is 18V or more.
2) DTC P1630 or P1633 is not detected.
3) 3 minutes or more has elapsed after starting engine.

DTC Set Condition:
Engine coolant temperature sensor voltage is more than 4.85 V.

Fault Judgement Period:
Approx. 4 sec.

Behavior When Trouble Occurs:
1) At normal emperature: Black smoke emission, greater engine combustion noise possible.
2) During idling at low atmospheric temperatures: Rough idling, engine stall, white smoke emission possible.
3) Back-up: Coolant temperature default setting (at starting: −20°C {−4°F}, at running: 80°C {176°F) EGR stopped

Diagnosis Lamp: ON

Recovery From Failure: *2

Possible Causes:
1) Engine coolant temperature more or less than specified value.
2) Looseness or play between ECM and coupling connector connection.
3) ECT sensor circuit is shorted to the power supply circuit.
4) Broken ECT sensor.
5) Open circuit or high resistance between ECM and ECT sensor.
6) Bad ECT.
7) Bad ECM.
8) Engine coolant temperature display showing error value.
